Opening remarks

A video from GAIA Conference 2019 opens the day. Jakob Andersson, chair of GAIA, then introduces GAIA as a non-profit association, run bottom up by engineers for engineers, and a day held online in three tracks: fairness, tools, and technical. He returns to the closing words of 2019 on the expectations we place on ourselves, our companies, and our community, and notes that after a year nobody expected, the community has become more aware of its own importance and of the need to do good things, and to do them fairly.

Josef Lindman Hörnlund, the conference host, introduces the fairness track with two examples of bias: the National Library of Sweden’s new BERT model, which fills in a nurse as female and a car mechanic as male, and the use of AI to predict crime.
